About Erik J. Behringer, PhD

I am an Associate Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Basic Sciences of 国产视频 (LLU) and my interests center on fundamental mechanisms of vascular health during development and aging. I believe that physiological research in the context of development and aging is the most effective approach for prevention and treatment of all major chronic diseases. As a current focus, we suspect that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology begins and accelerates with cerebrovascular pathology and impaired perfusion of the brain. In turn, we can delay or prevent AD altogether by optimizing cerebrovascular growth, structure, and ion channel activity. Thus, the goals of my laboratory entail (1) to comprehensively determine and examine interaction of molecular markers of cerebrovascular structure and function during aging and development of AD pathology; and (2) to establish novel mechanistic interventions and therapeutic pipelines based on convergent biomarkers and pathways associated with angiogenesis, vascular permeability, and cerebral blood flow control. We comprehensively apply molecular, biophysical, and vasoactive assessments to that end. As a result, we expect to develop unprecedented opportunities to maintain a healthy mind throughout the lifespan.
